His life in prison started on 11-16-2001 due to loitering for prostitution. He pled guilty to this charge. Then three days later he was arrested and charged with four cases of aggravated murder. Basically at this point it was just a land slide into the 48+ charged murders. The longer he was in police custody the more things began to link together. He ended up getting a divorce also as things started to unfold in court.
He was found capable of standing trial and ended up pleading guilty to avoid the death sentence. The end result was 48 life sentences plus 480 years in prison without the chance of parole. Oddly this was the plea bargain he took since it was better then his shot at a court sentence. He admitted to every crime and any later crime found relating to the "Green River Killer" this includes unknown cases and unidentifiable bodies. Gary Ridgway is still alive. It is rumored he attempted suicide in prison and also that people attempted to kill him. However solid evidence is not available to support these claims. He was held in a medium security prison until being transferred to Florence; a maximum security prison in Colorado.
